Caulfield Cup
The Caulfield Cup is one of the bigger races in Australia and is held a fortnight before the Melbourne Cup. It is the highlight of the Caulfield Cup Carnival which is held in October each year at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne.
The race itself is a handicap race run over a distance of 2400 metres and boasts a huge prize purse in $2.5 million. The best horses in Australia often contest this race, so it is highly competitive.
Many horses will often back up again a fortnight later in the Melbourne Cup as they strive to achieve the Cups Double. Punters love to bet on the Cups Double due to the very generous odds that are available.
Which Bookie Should You Bet With?
All bookies will offer Caulfield Cup markets, often well in advance of the actual race with their futures markets. However each bookie varies in the products they offer.
I like to recommend IASbet.com as they are generally regarded within the industry as the leaders in thoroughbred wagering in Australia. They offer early bird markets which are up before every other bookie, plus they have a product called City SuperPrice which guarantees a payout higher than the 3 Australian TAB’s.
Other bookies that come highly recommended are Centrebet.com who offer fixed odds betting at very decent odds, while Sportingbet.com.au and Sportsbet.com.au offer Quaddies which are extremely popular.
How To Pick a Winner?
There is no exact science to picking the Caulfield Cup winner. Obviously looking at form and stats at the track and distance are key things to look at, but I have a bit of a system I like to follow to narrow down the field.
Horses aged between 4yo, 5yo and 6yo have the best record of any horses in the long history of the race. Horses carrying between 56.5kg and 59.5kg is usually the weight range where the winner come from. Also, horses paying $20 and under are more likely to prevail as history suggests.
By picking horses with this criteria, you will be more likely to pick a winner then using any other system. It has actually worked well for me in the past so I will continue to do it this year and beyond.
What are the Key Lead Up Races?
When analysing the form in races, particularly Group 1 races such as the Caulfield Cup, it is a wise idea to look through the form in lead up races that have produced plenty of winners over the years.
There are three races which have proven to be a very good guide for the Caulfield Cup, with those races being the Toorak Handicap, the Yalumba Stakes and the Herbert Power Stakes.
All are run at Caulfield and are of a similar nature in conditions. You can be sure that a horse that wins the Caulfield Cup will almost certainly have come via one of these races with a bit of success.
