Tennis

Tennis is a highly popular sport in Australia and around the world with a huge television audience and massive betting turnover. The fast pace, awesome skill and extreme stamina that is required to play on the ATP Tour is a reason why tennis is such a popular sport, with many tennis players being the most recognisable sport stars on the planet.

Tennis betting is now a huge business and is becoming more and more popular with punters. The reasons why it has become one of the biggest betting sports is that it is played most of the year round, lots of information about players can be found online and of course when betting on the winner market there can only be two outcomes.

The main ATP tennis tour consists of weekly events, along with four Grand Slam events. Click the links below to see more information on each of them, and to see betting odds from the major bookmakers.

About the ATP Tour

The ATP Tour stands for the Association of Tennis Professionals and was formed in 1972. It acts as the sports world ranking governing body. Currently the ATP Tour features seven tournament categories listed in order of importance: Grand Slams, Tennis Masters Cup, ATP Masters Series, ATP International Series Gold, ATP International Series, ATP Challenger Series and Futures. These events contain over 500 tournaments worldwide each year and are watched by millions.

Season 2009 will see major changes to the ATP Tour. The ATP Tour structure will change into a three tier format with the 1000 Series, 500 Series and 250 Series. This means the current Master Series will become the new 1000 Series, while the International Series will become the 500 and 250 Series events. You will find odds and betting opportunities on most of these major ATP Tour tournaments.

Tennis Betting Advice

Hints and Tips

Tennis betting has become very popular in recent years. With most events now being shown live on Australian television, punters are now able to follow the ATP and WTA Tours in great detail and follow the progress of their bets with ease. Profiles and information on each and player can be easily accessed online and through magazines, so there are plenty of ways to analyse players prior to placing a wager.

In recent times tennis has been dominated by a select few individuals, making it tough for punters as the betting markets have become tightly centred around players such as Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal. But this is not necessarily a bad thing, such is the demanding nature of the ATP Tour schedule that these guys can’t be everywhere all the time, plus when you add in other considerations like form, fitness and fatigue, good betting opportunities will always follow.

Often we will see new players coming through to compete for the big titles, while simultaneously we will see a few of the older and more experienced players enjoying a resurgence, so the top seeds aren’t always a ‘shoe-in’ so to speak. Federer and Nadal are without doubt the best two players in the world, but the gap is quickly closing with stars such as Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Nalbandian all emerging as genuine threats.

Pay little attention to ranking points of contenders outside the top ten and don’t be afraid to back an outsider if you see potential value. Be mindful of players who continually return to compete in the same events as this can be used as a very handy guide. Players enjoy competing in their home country and can play out of their skins at home, so always take this into consideration. With certain tournaments, particularly in Russia and the Far East, home bias can often be stronger than in other events as it is a hostile environment. This is a huge advantage for the home court players.

Other suggestions we have are to look for players who look as though they are going through the motions as opposed to playing with a clear goal in mind. Some guys will be a lot more motivated than others. A good example of this is Roger Federer who looked as though he was going through the motions, often exiting major tournaments in 2008 at early stages. Also, with a return to smaller fields of 32, watch out for big each way prices, as players may only need to win three matches before you’re in the money. If you take into consideration all of the information above that we have told you, then you will be well on your way to making some serious money punting on tennis.

Bet Types

The popular thing about head to head betting with tennis is that there can be only two outcomes, there is no possibility of a drawn result, which varies from other sports. Often matches can be very uneven and the favourite will be quoted at extremely short odds, as is common with matches involving Roger Federer or Raphael Nadal, so finding value in other markets is important.

Rather than betting head to head, punters can now bet on how many sets will a particular player win by. Often you can get good odds on this as there are six different outcomes in every match, those being 3-0, 3-1, 3-2, 0-3, 1-3 and 2-3. If you analyse recent form trends and past history, there is plenty of money to be made in this market, particularly if you have a real short favourite and you fancy taking them to win 3-0 rather than the straight head to head victory.

Futures markets are another very common bet type with tennis. All bookmakers will offer odds on futures markets such as the Australian Open Winner, French Open winner, etc. It’s now quite common to see bookmakers offering special markets on the ATP Tour such as how many tour wins will Roger Federer have, how many tour wins will Andy Murray have, and so on. These are proving to be very popular with tennis enthusiasts.
